The basic geometrical shape of a square is defined by its borders. Each 4\u201dx 4\u201d square foam piece has been cut and soaked in a primer paint and when dry, adhered to the canvas. The artist\u2019s process of soaking, drying, and then applying to the canvas leaves the viewer with an imperfect and disfigured square. Miller\u2019s painting titled BLUE SQUARE is meant to allow the viewer to move beyond the borders of perfection and instead feel a sense of freedom. In other words, Miller asks us to think outside the box. The problem is that our \u201cout-of-the-box\u201d thinking generally happens within the confines of the colonial imagination \u2014 simply because, for many of us, it\u2019s all we\u2019ve ever known. This imperfect space between the blue squares allows our eyes and mind to recognize an opening.
