“Sheltered began as a simple desire to help tell the stories of unhoused parents living and parenting in a homeless shelter. As a parent myself, I was struck simultaneously by both the universal experiences of raising children and the unique challenges inherent to doing so publicly and in a shared and limited space. I saw how and where our greater community support systems made this experience both more attainable and more difficult for those experiencing it.
I then widened the scope of the project to include documenting both life on the street, as well as other community programs that seek to support this population. My hope was to show a more inclusive and thorough picture of the continuum of homeless experiences.
With Sheltered, my goal is to bring awareness to the issues and challenges faced daily when experiencing homelessness, as well as to highlight many of the commonalties shared by everyone both housed and unhoused.”
Synopsis
“Sheltered is the accumulation of a decade spent documenting the lives of people experiencing homelessness and navigating the systems created to help them transition into stable housing.
The exhibition as a whole explores the continuum of homelessness from unsheltered to transitional housing. It seeks to highlight the highs and lows of life without a permanent and reliable place to call home. It offers a look into the ways our community support systems both succeed and fail to meet the needs of many of our most vulnerable.”

“Sara Easter is a humanitarian and documentary photographer based in Arlington, TX, where she lives with her husband and 3 boys. She has been taking photos for over 20 years.
Sara has a Masters of Social Work and worked in that field for many years before taking on photography full time. She enjoys merging these two worlds to tell stories of social impact.”
