The African Drummer is part of my Africa series where I incorporate the true history of African Americans onto a canvas. Many African Americans embrace the word “nigga” as if that word is the beginning of our story or history. This word should be rejected like the names many African Americans reject that were a part of slavery in America. As a matter of fact the very first word and name that should have been rejected should have been the word nigga.
The greatness of Black people is in their resilience, innovation, strength, intelligence, courage loyalty, faith, spirituality, perseverance, endurance, tolerance and beauty. This African Drummer is NOT a nigga, but rather captures a small portion of the energy and spirit of the people. As the viewer experiences the rich bold colors I want them to hear the sounds coming from the drums. I want them to feel joy from the beats and partake in the joy of the drummer as he beats for joy and victory in his life. For the moment, he has no problems or challenges, only triumph.
